Historical Music and Books About Music and Musicians

(and other great literature)

Here are some great on-line music resources.
Some are books about music, such as Music Theory, Harmony, Counterpoint and Music History.
Others are collections of actual music for various ensembles as well as piano/vocal arrangements.

Books About Music and Musicians
Project GutenbergProject Gutenberg
Over 20,000 books made available once again, including some on music. A search on 'music' yields few results, yet there are many books pertaining to music at Project Gutenberg. Some authors to search for are Sousa, George Bernard Shaw, Arthur Elson, but there are others. Project Gutenberg books are all in the public domain in the U.S. Browse among the other books besides music books -- there is much great literature here as well as poetry, drama, history.
There is also a Project Gutenberg Australia and a Project Gutenberg Europe.
They are available in several formats:
  • uncompressed text in 7-bit or 8-bit ASCII
  • zip file of either text format
  • HTML format
  • zip file of the HTML format
Google Books Google Books Music Collection
These books are all digitized from original books which are in the public domain. Because these are PDF files comprised of graphic images, they're quite large. Some of these books are available in plain text format or in HTML format at Project Gutenberg, so try searching for them there in order to get smaller files of the same material.
